another morning walk in Cebu City, 24Jan2024

Sinulog Umbrellas #2: it was wonderful just watching the people and their expressions. The procession went on and on. The Colors were amazing!!, the “Santo Niño” (Holy Child statues) came in all kinds of shapes and sizes, the music was loud, and the Umbrellas...when I was editing the photos, the umbrellas took over! I'll share some candid people shots later.

One of the walk/processions I watched during Sinulog turned into an ocean of Umbrellas. I found a spot in the shade, and I just roamed the crowds with my camera...

I took some Jeepney photos the other day while I was waiting for one of the parades to start. It will be a sad day when they phase out these older Jeepneys. I understand the issues with climate-change, but as an artist/craftsperson, it's sad. Filipino Jeepneys are so unique and special: the colors, the family and vehicle names, the religious and pop icons painted on them, on and on. I won't miss my duck walking and bending my head down when I get into one of them, and most of the window openings are below my eye level. The newer busses that are being introduced now have large windows, and I can actually stand up in them, but what are we giving up?

I got up at 3am this morning so I could watch the Walk for Mary Procession at 4. I missed the candlelight Walk for Jesus last week. My plan was to find a short policewoman/security person to stand behind so I could get some good photos, and I also had to consider umbrellas popping up like mushrooms with the lightest sprinkle. This is very unlike Seattleites who only open their umbrellas if it actually Rains. We were out there in the dark with thousands of people in the middle of the largest roadway in Cebu, and after the main contingent passed by, all of the bystanders surged into the road, me included, to walk with them. Another day in Cebu during Sinulog...

Before I walked into the center of the Fuente Osmena Circle park the other evening, I walked around the park perimeter...

Sinulog Festival parades #2: we loved the colors and pageantry, but the participants worked hard because of the many pauses and a long day. Still, there were many smiles and good cheer. Even some of the Santo Nino statues of the infant Jesus looked tired...

We've gone to two of this year's Sinulog parades so far: wonderful costumes, amazing colors, drums, bugles, and two young men really getting into character :)
